Shut In (2022)

Shut In takes a simple, terrifying premise—one mother trapped with danger closing in—and turns it into a lean, nerve-tight ride that knows exactly how to squeeze suspense out of tight spaces and bad decisions. Director D.J. Caruso keeps the tension ratcheting with a polished, home-invasion-meets-confinement vibe, where every creak of the house feels like a countdown and every small choice matters. Rainey Qualley gives the film its beating heart, selling desperation and grit without melodrama, while Vincent Gallo’s unnerving presence adds a volatile edge that keeps you braced for the next turn. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone sensitive to themes of domestic abuse and predatory threat, but if you want a claustrophobic thriller that stays sharp, tense, and relentlessly watchable, this one delivers.

Shut In is clearly trying to be a tight, contained survival thriller about a mother’s desperation and grit, with horror elements and a moral “choose your family over your demons” backbone. The problem is it often plays like a bargain-bin version of better single-location thrillers: the tension comes in bursts, but the pacing can feel dull in between, and some performances and dialogue land a bit wooden and heavy-handed. It also leans into crude villainy and blunt messaging in a way that can feel more amateurish than chilling, which makes it hard to fully invest emotionally. If you’re looking for originality, psychological depth, or genuinely escalating suspense, this probably isn’t for you—but if you can tolerate rough edges for a simple, nasty little captivity story with a few satisfying “fight back” moments, you might get through it.
