Super Me (2021)

Super Me feels like a midnight fever dream with a brain: a propulsive fantasy-thriller that turns one man’s insomnia into a high-concept adventure about desire, consequence, and the price of getting what you think you want. Zhang Chong stages the dream-world set pieces with punchy, imaginative visuals that are as impressive as they are unsettling, while Darren Wang sells the desperation and exhilaration of a life suddenly rewritten by impossible riches. It’s “bloody fun” in the way a roller coaster is fun—fast, loud, and occasionally brutal—yet it keeps slipping in philosophical questions that linger after the adrenaline fades. Fair warning: the violence and intensity are severe, so if you’re squeamish it may be too much, but if you like stylish fantasy with real bite, it’s an entertaining gamble worth taking.

Super Me wants to be a slick, high-concept fantasy thriller about a desperate man weaponizing his nightmares into real-world success, with a side of romance and gangster pressure. The problem is it often looks better than it plays: the visual flair and dream imagery do a lot of heavy lifting while the story can get muddy and hard to track, and the performances don’t always sell the emotional stakes. If you’re coming for a convincing romance or tight, character-driven drama, this may feel like a flashy trailer stretched into a feature. Still, if you can forgive uneven acting for stylish, violent, nightmare-fueled set pieces, it has enough weird ambition to keep the right viewer watching.
