Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight is the rare fantasy that feels like a storybook painted in sunlight—until you realize the light is coming from somewhere deep, strange, and dangerous. As Riko and Reg descend into new layers of the Abyss, the film’s world-building becomes intoxicating: every creature, cavern, and artifact suggests an ecosystem with its own cruel logic, brought to life with gorgeous animation and a soundtrack that swells with wonder and dread in the same breath. The tone is equal parts awe and unease, and it rewards patience with an emotional core that hits harder than you expect, especially when new companions enter their orbit and the mystery sharpens. The problem is it’s a compilation film that assumes you’re already invested, so if you haven’t seen the series (or don’t remember it well), it can feel like you’re being rushed through key beats with minimal context and uneven character work. It also doubles down on the franchise’s most divisive traits—harsh body horror, suffering played for tragedy, and uncomfortable sexualized vibes around young characters—so even some fans find the tone hard to sit with.
