Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn is the rare fantasy adventure that feels genuinely vast and unknowable, luring you in with storybook charm before revealing a world with real weight and consequence. The animation is gorgeous in a way that matters: every layer of the Abyss feels textured, lived-in, and eerily inviting, and the film’s brisk pacing turns discovery into a steady drumbeat of wonder, dread, and awe. At its heart it’s a tender, determined bond between two kids stepping into the impossible, and the movie knows how to land emotional moments without smothering the thrill of exploration. Fair warning, though: beneath the cute designs is material that can be disturbing and occasionally harsh—if you can handle that tonal contrast, you’ll find a mesmerizing gateway into one of modern anime’s most imaginative worlds.

Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn is clearly trying to bottle the TV series’ biggest hook: a gorgeous, storybook world that lures you in, then reminds you it’s a death pit with rules that don’t care how young the heroes are. As a compilation, it moves fast and can feel uneven, rushing character beats and side characters so the emotional punches don’t always land with the force they should. More importantly, the film leans hard into brutality and unsettling material involving children, including punitive humiliation and some sexualized gags that many viewers will find flat-out off-putting rather than “edgy.” If you want dark fantasy with impeccable atmosphere and mystery, you’ll see the appeal; if you’re sensitive to child endangerment, sadistic training, or tonal whiplash, this is an easy skip (or at least a “watch the series instead, with warnings” situation).
