Unhinged (2020)

Unhinged takes an everyday annoyance—one impatient honk—and turns it into a lean, mean pressure-cooker of a thriller that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. Russell Crowe is terrifyingly watchable as a road-rage boogeyman, not because he’s flashy, but because he feels brutally plausible, and the film smartly keeps tightening the screws as the chase escalates. Derrick Borte directs with brisk, B-movie pulp confidence: the pacing is sharp, the tension rarely dips, and the vehicular mayhem lands with a nasty, metallic punch. It’s not for viewers who want subtlety or a breather—this one is grim, loud, and intense—but if you’re in the mood for a straightforward adrenaline ride with a great villain, it delivers.

Unhinged is trying to be a lean, nasty cautionary thriller about how one small act of impatience can ignite a nightmare, and it commits to that simple hook with relentless momentum. The problem is it’s more blunt-force anxiety than smart suspense: the villain is basically a rage machine, the escalation gets increasingly implausible, and the film doesn’t have much to say beyond “people are unhinged,” so don’t expect depth, nuance, or clever twists. If you like your thrillers grounded, character-driven, or psychologically insightful, this will probably feel loud, mean, and repetitive rather than tense. Still, Russell Crowe brings a grim physical presence, and if you just want a brisk, high-stress chase movie that doesn’t let up, it delivers exactly that.
