Countdown (2019)

Countdown takes a deliciously modern “what if your phone knew too much?” premise and turns it into a lean, high-voltage scare ride that doesn’t waste time getting to the good stuff. Director Justin Dec keeps the vibe slick and pulpy, with a self-aware wink that knows you came for jolts—and then delivers them with frequent, well-timed jump scares and a brisk pace that makes the runtime fly. Elizabeth Lail is an easy lead to root for, grounding the tech-horror hook with relatable panic and stubborn resolve as the dread closes in. It’s not trying to reinvent the genre, and if you crave slow-burn subtlety you may find it loud and direct, but if you want a fun, speedy thriller that plays like a cursed notification you can’t swipe away, it’s a solid night’s watch.

Countdown is clearly aiming for a slick, modern “technology as a curse” horror ride, with a ticking-clock premise that wants to keep you anxious from scene to scene. The problem is it rarely does anything fresh with that idea, leaning heavily on loud jump scares and familiar horror beats instead of building real dread or clever rules you can’t predict. The writing is serviceable at best, and the movie often feels more like a string of set-pieces than a story that sticks with you, with some uncomfortable harassment material that may put viewers off. If you’re happy with a fast, disposable popcorn scare and don’t mind clichés, it’ll pass the time; if you want originality, atmosphere, or genuinely unsettling horror, you’ll probably feel like you’ve seen this app before.
