Danielle Arbid directs with an intimate, unblinking female perspective, and Laetitia Dosch gives a fearless, deeply human performance that makes every glance, pause, and compromise feel painfully recognizable. The film’s Paris is captured in close, tactile images that turn bedrooms, hallways, and waiting rooms into emotional landscapes, and its audacity lies in how honestly it sits with longing without dressing it up as romance. It’s not for everyone—there’s explicit sex and a deliberately narrow focus on obsession—but if you’re open to a raw, beautifully made study of what it costs to want someone too much, it’s hypnotic.

Simple Passion is aiming for an unvarnished, almost clinical portrait of desire as obsession—less a sweeping romance than a study of waiting, dependence, and self-erasure. The problem is that the film’s narrow focus can feel thin and repetitive, with scenes that circle the same emotional beat until it starts to resemble inertia rather than insight, and the soundtrack doesn’t always help the mood. If you want plot momentum, meaningful dialogue, or a balanced two-person love story, this will likely frustrate you, and the frequent explicit sex and nudity aren’t decorative—they’re the main language of the relationship.
