What people think about Sex and the City
Sex and the City (2008) is a glossy, big-hearted return that understands its real love story isn’t a man or a wedding—it’s the electric bond between four women who know one another’s flaws and show up anyway. It’s funny in the way good friends are funny, a little indulgent in the way New York fantasies should be, and surprisingly sincere when it leans into heartbreak, pride, and the slow work of putting yourself back together. The film luxuriates in fashion and glamour, yes, but the sparkle has a pulse because the performances and chemistry make every brunch confession and late-night rescue feel lived-in. If you’re allergic to high-end escapism, frank R-rated sexuality, or romantic melodrama, it may feel like too much dessert—but if you want a warm, witty, emotionally cathartic hangout with characters who feel like old friends, it earns its champagne toast.
Sex and the City is clearly trying to give fans a big-screen victory lap: glossy New York escapism, friendship as the real love story, and a wedding-sized dose of romantic drama. The problem is it often feels like an extra-long TV episode stretched past its natural limit, with pacing that drags and plot beats that can seem thin or repetitive if you’re not already invested. The humor and dialogue still have flashes of the old sparkle, and the cast’s chemistry is the main reason to stick around, but the film leans hard on indulgence over sharp storytelling. If you didn’t love the series or you’re allergic to long runtimes, shopping montages, and relationship angst played at maximum volume, this probably isn’t your night.
