Mad Detective (2007)

Mad Detective is the kind of crime thriller that feels electrified by imagination, taking a familiar police-case framework and bending it into something daring, stylish, and strangely beautiful. Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai shoot the investigation with crisp momentum and offbeat flair, letting the film’s eccentric humor and unease coexist in a way that’s consistently entertaining rather than gimmicky. At its center is Bun, a protagonist as compelling as he is unpredictable, whose fractured perspective turns every conversation and clue into a tense little puzzle you can’t stop watching. Mad Detective is trying to fuse a hard-boiled police procedural with a psychologically fractured character study, using Bun’s “visions” as a stylish way to externalize guilt and hidden motives.
