Salt (2010)

Salt is the kind of lean, high-voltage spy thriller that grabs you by the collar in the first act and simply refuses to let go, propelled by Phillip Noyce’s crisp, practical action and a story that keeps shifting its weight under your feet. Angelina Jolie is terrific here—not just as an action star, but as a presence you can’t quite read, turning every glance and decision into part of the mystery while still delivering bruising, believable stunts. The movie’s real pleasure is its pacing: chase, fight, escape, revelation—each sequence hits, gets out, and leaves you wanting the next one, like a great airport novel filmed with muscle and precision. If you need airtight realism, you may roll your eyes at a few leaps, but if you want a slick, tense, relentlessly entertaining ride, Salt absolutely earns your time.

Salt is trying to be a sleek, breathless “who can you trust?” spy chase, built around Angelina Jolie’s physical commitment and a constant sense of pursuit. When it works, it’s a brisk, old-school action thriller with a strong lead performance and a few satisfyingly punchy set pieces. The problem is the script keeps piling on twists and coincidences until the logic starts to feel more like a dare than a story, and the supporting characters are mostly there to push the plot rather than feel like people. If you need spy thrillers to play fair and make sense, this will test your patience; if you’re happy to trade plausibility for momentum, it’s a fun enough ride.
