Redacted (2007)
A fictional documentary discusses the effects the Iraq war has had on soldiers and local people through interviews with members of an American military unit, the media, and local Iraqis.
What people think about Redacted
Redacted is Brian De Palma at his most urgent and formally daring, turning the modern media circus of war into a fractured, you-are-there mosaic of video diaries, news clips, and online footage that feels uncomfortably plausible. What makes it special isn’t polish but purpose: the screenplay uses that raw, documentary-like style to trap you inside the noise, confusion, and moral vertigo of occupation, while the performances stay naturalistic enough to make the horror land without movie-mythologizing. It’s a bracing, angry film with real anti-war force—less interested in comforting conclusions than in showing how violence radiates outward through soldiers, civilians, and the stories we tell about them. Fair warning: it’s not for everyone, because it depicts extreme brutality and sexual violence, but if you can handle a hard watch, it’s a courageous gut-punch that lingers long after the screen goes dark.
Redacted is clearly trying to indict the Iraq War and the media ecosystem around it by using a patchwork of “found” footage, diaries, and news clips to feel immediate and damning. The problem is that the faux-documentary approach often comes off as staged rather than authentic, with thin, stereotyped characters and performances that can make the most serious moments feel oddly unconvincing. Be warned: it tackles extremely graphic, upsetting subject matter (including sexual violence and the murder of civilians), and if the filmmaking doesn’t land for you, that experience can feel punishing instead of purposeful. If you can tolerate rough execution for the sake of an angry, confrontational message, there’s something to engage with—but if you need nuance, believable drama, or restraint, this likely isn’t for you.
