Taken (2008)
Bryan Mills, a former government operative, is trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter Kim. After reluctantly agreeing with his ex-wife to let Kim go to Paris on vacation with a friend, his worst nightmare comes true. While on the phone with his daughter shortly after she arrives in Paris, she and her friend are abducted by a gang of human traffickers. Working against the clock, Bryan relies on his extensive training and skills to track down the ruthless gang that abducted her and launch a one-man war to rescue his daughter.
What people think about Taken
What makes Taken special is how cleanly it turns a primal fear into a lean, relentless thrill ride—no fat, no fuss, just a ticking clock and a father who refuses to stop. Pierre Morel shoots the action with a sharp, street-level urgency that keeps the momentum snapping forward, and Liam Neeson gives Bryan Mills a gravelly, grounded intensity that makes every decision feel personal rather than superheroic. The vibe is brisk, tense, and satisfyingly direct, the kind of movie that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go until the credits. It’s not for everyone—its subject matter is grim and the moral universe is blunt—but if you want an efficient, adrenaline-charged action thriller that delivers exactly what it promises, this is the one.
Taken is trying to be a lean, high-stakes rescue thriller—a ticking-clock fantasy where a hyper-competent father turns panic into precision. If you want realism, nuance, or a thoughtful take on its grim subject matter, this may irritate you: it runs on clichés, convenient coincidences, and a morally murky “ends justify the means” vibe that the film doesn’t interrogate. The plot is basically an excuse to hop from one brutal set-piece to the next, so anyone looking for character depth or fresh storytelling will likely find it shallow. That said, it’s tightly paced, easy to follow, and Liam Neeson sells the single-minded determination well—just don’t expect subtlety or sophistication.
