Older Than America (2008)

Older Than America has the rare power to feel like a thriller while carrying the moral weight of testimony, using haunting visions not as cheap scares but as a doorway into history that was deliberately buried. Director Georgina Lightning brings an Indigenous perspective that gives the film its unmistakable authority and intimacy, grounding the supernatural unease in community, family, and the everyday texture of reservation life. The story moves with a slow, gathering dread—part mystery, part reckoning—as a young woman’s fractured glimpses begin to point toward a truth everyone has been trained to ignore, and the cast (with Adam Beach and Tantoo Cardinal in particular) keeps it human even when it turns harrowing. It isn’t a light watch, and its blunt anger at institutional cruelty may be too much for viewers looking for escapism, but if you want a film that confronts the legacy of boarding schools with conviction and purpose, this one stays with you.

Older Than America is clearly trying to fuse a supernatural-tinged thriller with a heartfelt reckoning of the horrors of Native boarding schools, and that intention deserves respect. The problem is the filmmaking often feels flat and TV-movie tidy, with on-the-nose dialogue and uneven performances that blunt the emotional impact and drain tension from what should be a genuinely haunting story. The mystery threads and intersecting subplots don’t always build momentum, so it can play more like earnest melodrama than a gripping chiller. If you’re looking for a sharp, atmospheric thriller, this may frustrate you, but if you’re willing to accept rough execution for the sake of the subject matter and moments of sincerity, it can still land.
