Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (2009)

Precious is one of those rare dramas that feels like it’s looking life straight in the eye and still finding a pulse of grace inside it, powered by a breakout performance from Gabourey Sidibe that’s raw, funny in flashes, and fiercely human. Lee Daniels directs with an unflinching honesty, but the film’s real strength is its empathy: it refuses to reduce its heroine to her suffering, and instead lets small victories—learning a word, speaking a truth, imagining a different future—land like thunder. Mo’Nique is terrifyingly good, and the supporting cast brings warmth and oxygen to a story that could have been unbearable without them. This is a tough watch with disturbing subject matter, so it’s not for everyone, but if you can handle its darkness, it offers something hard-earned and quietly uplifting: the sight of a spirit refusing to be erased.

Precious is trying to be a raw, unapologetic portrait of survival and self-worth in the face of relentless abuse, and it absolutely commits to that mission. The problem is it can feel engineered to devastate you—stacking trauma upon trauma in a way that some viewers will read as manipulative, melodramatic, or even voyeuristic rather than illuminating. If you’re sensitive to depictions of sexual violence, incest, domestic abuse, or you simply don’t want a film that lives in prolonged misery to make its point, this will likely feel punishing instead of powerful. That said, the performances (especially Gabourey Sidibe and Mo’Nique) are the real reason it’s endured, and when the story focuses on education, community, and small steps toward agency, it finds genuine, hard-earned humanity.
