Flame & Citron (2008)

Flame & Citron is that rare war film that feels less like a history lesson and more like a lived-in descent into moral fog, where every shadow seems to hide a price. With a noir-ish pulse and atmospheric cinematography that turns occupied Copenhagen into a city of whispers and danger, it follows two resistance assassins whose confidence curdles into doubt as the lines between allies, enemies, and opportunists blur. The performances anchor the tension beautifully, making the men’s courage, fear, and stubborn pride feel painfully human rather than heroic in quotation marks. It’s gripping and intense without resorting to cheap thrills, though if you want clean-cut righteousness and easy answers, this one is unapologetically interested in the mess.

Flame & Citron is aiming for a gritty, morally tangled resistance thriller, more interested in paranoia, shifting loyalties, and the psychological cost of killing than in crowd-pleasing heroics. The problem is it often plays like a long, sprawling trudge: the plot gets labyrinthine without always feeling urgent, and the pacing can turn slow and a bit staid when you’re expecting sharper momentum. If you want a tight, high-intensity war movie with clear targets and big emotional payoffs, this may leave you disappointed. But if you’re patient with deliberately murky storytelling, it does offer strong atmosphere, solid performances, and a sober take on how messy “the right side” can get.
