Unthinkable (2010)

Unthinkable is the kind of thriller that doesn’t just tighten the screws—it asks whether you’re comfortable with who’s turning them, and why. Gregor Jordan stages the ticking-clock premise with nerve-rattling intensity, but what really hooks you is the acting: Samuel L. Jackson is chillingly controlled as the government’s “necessary evil,” Michael Sheen brings an unnerving calm to the man holding the country hostage, and Carrie-Anne Moss becomes the audience’s moral compass in a room designed to break one. The film’s power comes from how it keeps the suspense alive while forcing you to sit with messy, adult questions about security, ethics, and the price of certainty. It’s absolutely not for everyone—its violence is graphic and the interrogation scenes are punishing—but if you can handle a hard R-rated experience, it’s a gripping, provocative watch that lingers long after the credits.

Unthinkable is clearly aiming to be a ripped-from-the-headlines moral pressure cooker about how far a government should go to stop catastrophe, and it wants you arguing with yourself the whole time. The problem is it often trades genuine ethical tension for prolonged, graphic interrogation scenes that can feel more like endurance viewing than suspense, with dialogue that sometimes lands as blunt political monologues instead of believable people talking. Samuel L. Jackson brings intensity and control, and the premise is inherently gripping, but the film’s tone can be clumsy and confused about what it’s condemning versus what it’s exploiting. If you’re sensitive to torture, threats involving children, or you want a thriller that’s more cat-and-mouse than shock-and-awe, this is one to skip.
