Normal (2007)

Normal is the kind of quiet, emotionally precise drama that doesn’t announce itself with big speeches, but sneaks up on you through the way grief lingers in rooms, marriages, and everyday routines. Carl Bessai intercuts a handful of lives touched by one terrible accident, and instead of turning it into melodrama, he finds the raw, recognizable truth in how people cope—by freezing, by fleeing, by lashing out, by reaching for the wrong comforts. Carrie-Anne Moss gives a piercing, human performance as a mother trapped in the gravity of loss, while Kevin Zegers and Callum Keith Rennie bring a bruised authenticity to characters trying to live with what can’t be undone. It’s not for viewers looking for tidy catharsis or plot-driven thrills, but if you want a thoughtful film that treats pain with respect and still makes room for the possibility of change, Normal is worth your time.

Normal is clearly aiming for a sober, interconnected look at grief and guilt after a tragic accident, and it treats its characters with empathy rather than cheap melodrama. The downside is that it’s a slow, heavy sit with lots of quiet suffering and unresolved tension, so if you want momentum, catharsis, or a clean “lesson learned” payoff, you may find it emotionally draining and a bit monotonous. The ensemble approach means you’re constantly shifting between storylines, which can feel more like observing pain than getting truly close to any one person. Still, the performances (especially Carrie-Anne Moss) and the grounded, unflashy tone will work for viewers who prefer intimate, realistic drama over plot-driven storytelling.
