Love & Mercy (2015)
In the late 1960s, the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson stops touring, produces "Pet Sounds" and begins to lose his grip on reality. By the 1980s, under the sway of a controlling therapist, he finds a savior in Melinda Ledbetter.
What people think about Love & Mercy
Love & Mercy is the rare music biopic that doesn’t try to summarize a legend’s whole life—it tries to understand him, and that’s what makes it quietly extraordinary. By weaving Brian Wilson’s incandescent 1960s studio genius with the haunted, controlled fog of his 1980s life, the film creates a emotional echo chamber where creativity and vulnerability feel inseparable, and Bill Pohlad’s direction keeps it intimate rather than sensational. Paul Dano is revelatory as Wilson at the height of invention, and John Cusack brings a bruised, searching gentleness to the later years, while Elizabeth Banks grounds the story with steady human warmth. It can be an intense watch when it leans into mental illness and manipulation, but if you want a drama that treats artistry and recovery with compassion—and lets the music feel like a lifeline—this one stays with you.
Love & Mercy is clearly trying to do the respectful thing: honor Brian Wilson’s genius while showing the very real cost of it, using a split timeline to contrast creation with control. When it’s in the 1960s studio trenches, it’s gripping and textured, with Paul Dano capturing the fragile, obsessive spark behind Pet Sounds in a way that feels lived-in rather than “biopic.” The downside is that the film can still slip into familiar inspirational-beats territory, and the 1980s storyline—while important—sometimes plays more like a straightforward rescue narrative with thinner characterization and softer edges than the messiness probably deserved. If you want a deep, comprehensive Beach Boys history or a relentlessly propulsive music movie, this may feel a bit uneven and politely paced, but if you’re up for a humane, performance-driven portrait, it’s worth your time.
