Bride Wars (2009)

Bride Wars is the kind of glossy, high-energy studio comedy that turns a fairy-tale setting into a battleground, and it’s hard not to enjoy watching Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway go for broke as best friends whose wedding dreams collide. The movie’s real hook isn’t the romance, but the friendship—how quickly love can curdle into competition, and how even the pettiest sabotage can feel weirdly personal when it’s coming from the one person who knows you best. Gary Winick keeps the vibe bright and buzzy, stacking set pieces with a brisk, candy-colored momentum, and there are a few supporting turns (including a scene-stealing Kristen Johnston) that pop at just the right moments. It won’t convert anyone who hates broad, occasionally mean-spirited rom-com antics, but if you’re in the mood for a silly, cathartic duel with sharp comic timing and a surprising soft spot for female bonds, it’s an easy crowd-pleaser.
