100 Feet (2008)

100 Feet is the kind of haunted-house movie that feels intimate and bruisingly personal, turning a simple premise into a pressure cooker of dread where the walls don’t just close in—they remember. With Famke Janssen giving a fiercely grounded performance, the film lets its supernatural shocks land harder because they’re tethered to real trauma, guilt, and the uneasy question of what freedom even means when you can’t leave your own front door. The atmosphere is thick and claustrophobic, the scares are sharp without being cheap, and the story has a thoughtful undercurrent that lingers after the lights come up. It won’t be for everyone if you’re sensitive to themes of domestic abuse or prefer your horror purely fun and escapist, but if you like suspense with a pulse and a point, this is an underappreciated gem worth letting in.

100 Feet is clearly aiming for a claustrophobic, cathartic “you can’t escape your abuser” haunted-house story, and on paper that’s a strong hook. The problem is it leans on loud, chaotic scares and messy supernatural rules, so the plot starts feeling thin and the logic gaps pile up fast. The effects and some over-the-top moments can yank you out of it, and the ending tends to land more as “wait, what?” than satisfying payoff. If you’re here for tight mythology and believable escalation, you’ll likely be irritated; if you just want a grim, contained horror ride with a committed lead performance and a nasty vibe, you might get enough out of it.
