Saw IV (2007)

Saw IV has the rare sequel trick of feeling both like a relentless thrill ride and a puzzle box that clicks deeper into place the longer you watch. Darren Lynn Bousman keeps the pace breathless, cutting between a desperate, moral-pressure-cooker “game” and an investigation that turns the franchise’s mythology into something surprisingly engrossing rather than mere backstory. It’s grisly, yes—often brutally so—but the inventiveness of the traps and the mounting sense that every detail matters give the film a propulsive, you-can’t-look-away momentum, capped by the kind of twisty recalibration Saw fans live for. If you’re squeamish or tired of gore, this won’t convert you, but if you’ve ever been tempted by the series’ mix of crime-thriller dread and wicked narrative engineering, this is one of the entries that reminds you why it became a phenomenon.

Saw IV is clearly trying to keep the franchise alive after Jigsaw’s death by doubling down on the “lesson” angle, expanding the mythology, and stitching together timelines to make everything feel bigger and more interconnected. The problem is it often plays like a checklist of traps and twists rather than a story with breathing room, so if you’re already feeling series fatigue, this one can feel repetitive and oddly mechanical. The gore is front and center and the procedural subplot is busy to the point of clutter, meaning the shocks land more from volume than ingenuity. That said, if you watch these movies mainly for grim, high-intensity set pieces and you enjoy puzzle-box continuity, it delivers exactly that—just don’t expect it to feel fresh or especially coherent.
