Brüno (2009)
Flamboyantly gay Austrian television reporter Bruno stirs up trouble with unsuspecting guests and large crowds through brutally frank interviews and painfully hilarious public displays of homosexuality.
What people think about Brüno
Brüno is the kind of comedy that feels like a high-wire act performed without a net: Sacha Baron Cohen barrels into real rooms full of real people and, with fearless commitment, turns their discomfort into a brutally funny mirror held up to celebrity worship, moral posturing, and public hypocrisy. The vibe is gleefully outrageous and confrontational—less a cozy sit-back laugh than a dare that keeps topping itself—yet beneath the provocation there’s a sharp satirical intelligence that knows exactly what it’s poking. It’s also surprisingly effective at exposing how quickly “tolerance” can curdle when someone refuses to make themselves palatable. Fair warning: the explicit nudity and crude sexual humor are absolutely the point, so if that’s a dealbreaker you’ll hate it; if you can handle the R-rated extremity, you’ll get some of the biggest, most disbelieving laughs of the decade.
Brüno is trying to weaponize outrageous, in-your-face satire to expose hypocrisy around fame, masculinity, and homophobia, using Sacha Baron Cohen’s prank-documentary style as the delivery system. When it lands, the nerve and commitment can be genuinely funny, and a few set pieces have that jaw-dropping “did they really do that?” energy. But it’s also patchy and repetitive, leaning hard on shock nudity and crude sex gags in ways that can feel more like endurance-testing provocation than sharp comedy, and the use of gay stereotypes may read as lazy or demeaning rather than incisive. If you don’t enjoy prank humiliation, explicit sexual content, or comedy that aims to offend first and make a point second, this one will likely feel like a waste of your time.
