Della Myers, a suburban housewife, lives with her twin children and her abusive husband, Kenneth. On Christmas Eve, she drives to the local mall to buy gift-wrap. In the jam-packed parking lot, she notices an old car taking up two spaces and decides to leave a note on the windshield calling them out. After the mall closes, her car is blocked by the old car and she's threatened by four thugs. She escapes in her vehicle, but they drive after her. She crashes at a dead end construction site at the edge of a forest. What unfolds in the desolate woods is Della's lone fight for survival against a gang of angry young men with murderous intent.

Explained

What people think about While She Was Out

While She Was Out is the kind of lean, mean thriller that takes an everyday irritation and turns it into a nightmarish pressure cooker, powered by a ferocious Kim Basinger performance that makes you believe every ounce of fear, fury, and grit. Director Susan Montford keeps the vibe raw and wintry, stripping away comfort until it’s just one woman, the dark edge of civilization, and the terrifying realization that survival may require becoming someone she didn’t know she could be. What makes it linger isn’t just the chase-and-escape intensity, but the way it quietly flips the usual “woman-in-peril” dynamics into something angrier and more purposeful without ever turning preachy. It’s not for the squeamish—there are sexual threats and brutal violence—but if you want a tense, cathartic, survival-driven thriller with real bite, this one earns its scars.
