Please Give (2010)

Please Give is special because it turns everyday New York discomfort—money, guilt, manners, and the things we tell ourselves to feel decent—into a comedy-drama that’s as sharp as it is compassionate. Nicole Holofcener writes with the kind of observant wit that makes you laugh and wince in the same breath, and she directs her ensemble like a conductor of small, revealing moments, letting silences and side glances do as much work as the dialogue. Catherine Keener is terrific as a woman whose generosity can’t quite outrun her anxieties, while Amanda Peet and Oliver Platt add bite, warmth, and messy humanity to a neighborhood orbit of people who keep colliding in ways that feel painfully real. If you want big plot twists or easy moral answers, this isn’t that kind of movie—but if you like smart, adult storytelling that finds tenderness inside awkwardness, it’s an immensely satisfying watch.

Please Give is aiming for a sharp, quietly funny slice-of-life about guilt, privilege, and the small hypocrisies of “good” people in Manhattan, and you can feel Nicole Holofcener’s intent to make you squirm in recognition rather than wow you with plot. The catch is that it’s deliberately slight and muted, with pacing that can read as meandering and conflicts that simmer instead of detonating, so if you want a big emotional payoff or a tidy resolution, you may leave feeling underfed. A lot of the characters are prickly, self-absorbed, or emotionally evasive on purpose, which is insightful when it lands and just unpleasant when it doesn’t. If you’re into talky, observational dramedies with excellent performances and uncomfortable honesty, it’s worth your time; if you need momentum, warmth, or a cathartic ending, this probably isn’t your movie.
