Boot Camp grabs you by the collar with a premise that feels like a postcard-perfect paradise curdling into a waking nightmare, and it sustains that tension with a lean, propulsive sense of dread. Christian Duguay turns the remote Fijian setting into a beautifully cruel trap, while Mila Kunis and Gregory Smith bring a grounded, human pulse to the story—kids who aren’t saints, but don’t deserve what’s coming—opposite Peter Stormare’s chilling authority. The vibe is part survival drama, part psychological thriller, less about twists than the slow realization of how easily “help” can become control when no one’s watching. It’s a tough sit given the depiction of severe abuse and sexual violence, but if you can handle dark material, it’s an anger-fueled, suspenseful watch that sticks with you.

Boot Camp is clearly aiming for an outraged, ripped-from-the-headlines thriller about “troubled teen” programs and how easily authority can slide into cruelty, and the premise has real built-in tension. The problem is the execution: the writing often turns the camp staff into broad, mustache-twirling villains, which makes the whole thing feel more like a blunt lecture than a believable descent into control and abuse. It also goes hard on disturbing material (including sexual violence and torture-like punishment), so if you’re sensitive to exploitation-leaning shock or want a nuanced drama, this may feel ugly without being insightful. If you’re here mainly for Mila Kunis and a contained survival setup, there are moments of intensity and a few committed performances, but don’t expect subtlety or a particularly satisfying, grounded payoff.
