Valhalla Rising (2010)

Valhalla Rising is less a Viking adventure than a primal fever dream—an elemental march through mud, mist, and myth that Nicolas Winding Refn films with the solemn beauty of an ancient saga carved into stone. Mads Mikkelsen, nearly wordless, gives a commanding physical performance that turns every stare and breath into storytelling, while the sound and imagery build a hypnotic atmosphere that feels both historical and otherworldly. It’s mesmerizing in the way a bonfire is mesmerizing: you can’t look away, even when it’s dangerous, and the film’s stark brutality is part of its grim honesty. If you need fast exposition and clear answers, this may feel opaque, but if you’re open to a bold, uncompromising cinematic trance, it’s unforgettable.

Valhalla Rising is clearly aiming for a hypnotic, mythic descent into spiritual and existential darkness, using Viking imagery as a canvas for mood more than story. The problem is it’s deliberately thin on plot and dialogue, paced like a funeral march, and so committed to its symbolism that it can feel more like an art installation than a film you “get into.” The violence is frequent and nasty, and because there’s so little conventional character work to balance it, it may come off as punishing rather than meaningful if you’re not already on the movie’s wavelength. If you want a gripping Viking adventure with clear stakes and momentum, skip it; if you’re happy to watch Mads Mikkelsen brood through stunning, bleak visuals and let the film wash over you, there’s a grim, atmospheric payoff.
