Smart People (2008)

Smart People is the kind of grown-up comedy-drama that sneaks up on you: funny in a dry, literate way, but quietly disarming when it starts poking at the bruises people hide behind intelligence and sarcasm. Dennis Quaid gives Lawrence Wetherhold a prickly humanity that makes his arrogance feel less like a pose and more like armor, and the chemistry around him—especially with Sarah Jessica Parker’s steady, clear-eyed warmth and Thomas Haden Church’s charming mess of a brother—creates a family dynamic that feels lived-in rather than sitcom-neat. The film’s pleasure is in its small turns: barbed conversations, awkward tenderness, and the slow realization that being “smart” doesn’t translate to being emotionally fluent. If you’re looking for big laughs or sweeping romance, this may feel modest and talky, but if you like character pieces with wit, heart, and actors doing deceptively precise work, it’s an easy one to recommend.

Smart People is aiming for a witty, grown-up dramedy about brilliant people who can analyze everything except their own feelings, and the setup has real potential with a strong cast. The problem is it often feels like it’s going through the motions of the familiar “dysfunctional family learns to open up” template, with thin plotting, flat pacing, and relationships that don’t dig as deep as the movie wants you to believe. If you’re expecting sharp comedy, real romantic spark, or a cathartic emotional punch, this may come off as pleasant-but-bland and oddly surface-level.
