Gabriel (2007)
Gabriel tells the story of an archangel who fights to bring light back to purgatory - a place where darkness rules - and save the souls of the city's inhabitants.
What people think about Gabriel
Gabriel is the kind of scrappy, visionary genre film that earns your attention through sheer style and conviction: a neon-noir purgatory where angels wear human weakness like a bruise, and every hallway feels drenched in dread and possibility. Shane Abbess stretches a tiny budget into something surprisingly slick, with bold visuals and muscular sound design that make the city feel alive, hostile, and strangely seductive. The action lands with a punchy, comic-book ferocity, and Andy Whitfield gives the title role a stern, weary intensity that sells the spiritual stakes without winking at them. It’s not for viewers who need subtle world-building or prestige polish, but if you want an ambitious fantasy-horror ride that looks and sounds bigger than it “should,” this one delivers.
Gabriel is clearly aiming for a gritty, comic-book-style angel-vs-demon showdown in a noir-ish purgatory, and the ambition is real even if the budget isn’t. The problem is it often feels like a collage of better supernatural action films, with stiff dialogue, thin characters, and pacing that drifts when it should be tightening the screws. If you’re coming for scary set pieces or sharp mythology, you may find it oddly talky and dramatically flat, with more posturing than payoff. Still, if you’re tolerant of rough edges and you mainly want moody visuals, simple good-vs-evil vibes, and Andy Whitfield’s committed presence, it can work as a late-night curiosity rather than a must-see.
