Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society (2007)
The story takes place in the year 2034, two years after the events in Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG. Female cyborg Major Motoko Kusanagi has left Public Security Section 9, an elite counter-terrorist and anti-crime unit specializing in cyber-warfare, which has expanded to a team of 20 field operatives with Togusa acting as the field lead.
What people think about Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – Solid State Society is the rare sci-fi thriller that makes its action feel like an extension of its ideas: every chase, firefight, and hack points back to a chilling question about what a “society” becomes when systems start thinking for us. Set in a sleek, lived-in 2034, it plays like a futuristic crime film with real momentum, following Section 9 through a knot of suicides, terrorism, and digital manipulation that keeps tightening without resorting to cheap confusion. Kenji Kamiyama’s direction has the confidence to move fast and still leave you with afterimages—of Motoko’s ghostly presence, Togusa’s grounded detective work, and a world where technology isn’t just a tool, it’s a moral weather system. If you want pure standalone spectacle, it may feel dense, but if you like smart genre storytelling that respects your attention and rewards it with sharp twists, this is absolutely worth your time.
Solid State Society is clearly trying to be a smart, grown-up capstone to Stand Alone Complex, expanding the series’ political paranoia into a bigger idea about systems, welfare, and control. The problem is it delivers that ambition through a lot of dense dialogue and procedural explanation, so if you’re expecting sleek, propulsive cyber-action, it can feel oddly bloodless and low on thrills. It also assumes you’re already fluent in the SAC world, and if you’re not, the plot can come off more confusing than intriguing. If you love the franchise’s philosophical crime-solving and don’t mind a talky, methodical pace, there’s plenty to chew on—but for action-first viewers, this one may feel like homework with a gunshot or two.
