Diary of the Dead (2007)
A group of young filmmakers encounter real zombies while filming a horror movie of their own.
What people think about Diary of the Dead
Diary of the Dead feels special because it takes Romero’s zombies back to their sharp, socially wired roots and filters them through the jittery immediacy of cameras that won’t stop rolling. Instead of just piling on scares, it turns the found-footage style into a sly argument about what we choose to watch, what we choose to record, and how quickly “documenting” can become its own kind of moral surrender—all while delivering plenty of tense, messy, darkly funny survival horror. The vibe is raw and urgent, like you’re riding along with smart, panicked film kids as the world’s rules crumble in real time, and Romero keeps it credible enough that the chaos stings. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to handheld shakiness or graphic gore, but if you like zombie movies with bite beyond the teeth, this one has brains and a wicked grin.
Diary of the Dead is George A. Romero trying to drag his zombie saga into the YouTube age, using found-footage filmmaking to comment on voyeurism, media obsession, and how quickly people turn cruelty into content. The problem is it can feel like the movie is lecturing you while it’s happening—self-conscious, moralizing, and not terribly subtle—so the horror often takes a back seat to the message. If you’re hoping for sustained dread or genuinely scary set pieces, you may find it more noisy and hectic than frightening, with the shaky “documentary” style doing as much to irritate as it does to immerse. That said, Romero still delivers a few sharp ideas and some satisfyingly gnarly zombie mayhem, so it’s best for viewers who like the concept of horror-as-social-commentary and can tolerate a preachy tone and relentless gore.
