The Deal (2008)
Charlie Berns is a veteran Hollywood movie producer who has given up on his career and life. That is until his idealistic screenwriter nephew comes bearing the script of a lifetime and Charlie decides to give his career one final shot. The only thing standing in his way is Diedre Hearn, a sharp-witted studio executive brought in to keep Charlie in line.
What people think about The Deal
The Deal is a breezy, Hollywood-insider comedy that finds real comic bite in the way movies get “made” when ego, desperation, and sheer momentum replace good sense. William H. Macy is wonderfully sharp and human as a burned-out producer who rediscovers his hustle, and watching him spar—and spark—with Meg Ryan’s coolly competent studio watchdog gives the film its most winning rhythm. The tone is light on its feet and knowingly ridiculous, the kind of satire that keeps moving fast enough to make even the absurdities feel plausibly showbiz. It’s not for everyone—if you want a deep, polished farce or dislike industry in-jokes and R-rated language—but if you enjoy charming performances and a comedy that treats Hollywood like its own lunatic ecosystem, this one’s an easy yes.
The Deal wants to be a snarky, affectionate Hollywood satire about how movies get made, with William H. Macy playing a washed-up producer clawing his way back through sheer hustle and bad decisions. The problem is it leans so hard into industry in-jokes and chaotic plotting that the comedy often feels scattered rather than sharp, and the story keeps wandering into subplots that don’t pay off. The Macy–Meg Ryan flirtation is meant to add sparkle, but it can come off more like a checkbox than genuine chemistry, which blunts the movie’s emotional hook. If you enjoy behind-the-scenes showbiz cynicism and can coast on a few witty moments and a game cast, you might have fun; if you want a focused comedy with big laughs and a strong romantic engine, this one may test your patience.
