The Deal is a breezy, Hollywood-insider comedy that finds real comic bite in the way movies get “made” when ego, desperation, and sheer momentum replace good sense. William H. Macy is wonderfully sharp and human as a burned-out producer who rediscovers his hustle, and watching him spar—and spark—with Meg Ryan’s coolly competent studio watchdog gives the film its most winning rhythm. The tone is light on its feet and knowingly ridiculous, the kind of satire that keeps moving fast enough to make even the absurdities feel plausibly showbiz.
