Forever Strong (2008)
Hotshot rugby player Rick Penning was the star player of his Arizona high school team until a fateful brush with the law forces him to ponder the consequences of his actions in a Salt Lake City juvenile detention center.
What people think about Forever Strong
Forever Strong takes the familiar sports-redemption template and gives it a bruising, oddly uplifting jolt, powered by rugby sequences that feel fast, physical, and sharply edited rather than politely inspirational. Ryan Little shoots the game like it matters—mud, blood, and momentum—while Sean Faris sells the cocky self-destruction and the slow, hard-earned shift toward accountability, anchored by steady turns from Gary Cole and Sean Astin. The tone is earnest without being syrupy, the kind of movie that believes discipline and teamwork can save a life, even if it knows change comes with setbacks and scars. It is a bit predictable in its arc and it doesn’t shy away from violence, injury, and teen substance abuse, but if you want a high-energy sports drama with real impact and a surprisingly sincere heart, this one delivers.
Forever Strong is aiming for an inspirational sports-redemption story about a talented kid getting humbled, learning discipline, and finding a better kind of “team” than the one he grew up with. The problem is it follows the playbook almost beat-for-beat, so if you’ve seen one troubled-athlete-turns-his-life-around drama, you’ll likely predict every turn and feel the movie leaning hard into sentiment and sermonizing. It does have some solid rugby action and a likable mentor vibe from Gary Cole, but the character work and dialogue can come off corny rather than earned. If you want a gritty, nuanced drama about consequences, this may feel too clean and packaged—whereas if you’re in the mood for a straightforward, crowd-pleasing underdog tale with bruising sports scenes, it’ll do the job.
