Semi-Pro (2008)
Jackie Moon is the owner, promoter, coach, and star player of the Flint Michigan Tropics of the American Basketball Association (ABA), the worst team in the league. In 1976 before the ABA collapses, the NBA plans to merge with the best teams of the ABA at the end of the season. Only the top four teams will make the move and the worst teams will fold. If the Tropics want to make it to the NBA, Jackie Moon must rally his team and start winning.
What people think about Semi-Pro
Semi-Pro is a shaggy, cheerfully unhinged time capsule of 1976 sports culture, the kind of comedy that commits so hard to its ridiculousness that you can’t help but admire the hustle. Will Ferrell turns Jackie Moon into a walking publicity stunt with a bruised heart, and the movie’s real pleasure is how his ego ricochets off Woody Harrelson’s weary cool and André 3000’s sly, deadpan charm, creating banter that feels like a locker-room improv session that actually lands. The period setting isn’t just wallpaper—it’s the joke engine, from the ABA’s scrappy desperation to the gaudy spectacle of it all, giving the film a warm, goofy vibe even when it’s being shameless. It is definitely not for everyone—rated-R crudeness and broad gags come standard—but if you like your sports comedies loud, loose, and relentlessly committed to the bit, this one plays like a crowd-pleaser.
Semi-Pro is clearly trying to be a goofy, 1970s-flavored underdog sports comedy where Will Ferrell’s loud, clueless optimism bulldozes everyone into a feel-good team story. The problem is it often feels like a sketch stretched to feature length: the plot and stakes are thin, the satire is blunt, and a lot of the humor leans on recycled period gags, crude bits, and familiar Ferrell mannerisms rather than sharp escalation. If you’re not already on board for R-rated silliness (heavy profanity, sexual jokes, and gross-out detours) you’ll likely find it more noisy than funny. That said, Woody Harrelson brings some grounding charm, André 3000 is a fun change of pace, and when the movie focuses on the team dynamic instead of the stunts, it briefly clicks.
