Daisy Diamond (2007)
A tragic story about Anna who dreams of one thing only: making it as an actress. She moves from Sweden to Copenhagen to pursue her dream. But fate has something else in store for her. Though she struggles to give her 4-month-old daughter a good start in life, she ultimately fails to unite her dream of acting with a safe and loving environment for her child, culminating in a desperate act that has fatal consequences for Anna and her daughter.
What people think about Daisy Diamond
Daisy Diamond is the kind of fearless, needle-to-the-nerve drama that doesn’t ask for your comfort so much as your attention, powered by a raw, career-defining performance from Noomi Rapace that feels lived-in rather than “acted.” Director Simon Staho keeps the camera close and the emotions closer, capturing the bruising collision between ambition, motherhood, and a city that can look glamorous from afar and merciless up close. The film’s vibe is bleak, intimate, and relentlessly human—more a descent than a journey—yet it’s made with such conviction that you can’t dismiss it as mere shock. It’s absolutely not for everyone given its harrowing subject matter, but if you’re drawn to uncompromising character studies that test the limits of empathy, this one leaves a mark.
Daisy Diamond is trying to be an unflinching tragedy about ambition, motherhood, and how a young woman’s life collapses when support systems fail her, and it commits to that vision with zero compromise. The problem is it’s so relentlessly bleak and confrontational—stacking rape, hard drug use, prostitution, porn, and child harm—that it can feel less like insight and more like endurance, especially if you’re sensitive to exploitation or despair-heavy storytelling. Noomi Rapace is ferociously committed and the film has a stark, grim atmosphere, but it offers very little relief, catharsis, or warmth. If you want a drama that illuminates darkness without drowning you in it, this one is likely not for you.
