Pet Sematary (2019)
Dr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, move from Boston to Ludlow, in rural Maine, with their two young children. Hidden in the woods near the new family home, Ellie, their eldest daughter, discovers a mysterious cemetery where the pets of community members are buried.
What people think about Pet Sematary
Pet Sematary (2019) earns its scars by treating horror like a slow, poisonous fog rather than a cheap jump-scare delivery system: the woods feel watchful, the house feels too close to the road, and every quiet moment carries the weight of something unsaid. Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kölsch lean into a bleak, serious tone that makes the dread feel earned, while Jason Clarke and Amy Seimetz ground the story in recognizable grief and denial instead of genre theatrics. It’s a remake with the nerve to make bold choices, so even if you know the premise, it can still catch you off guard in the way it shapes its unease. Fair warning, this one is nasty and heavy—more existential gut-punch than funhouse ride—but if you like your horror atmospheric, tense, and willing to stare into the dark, it’s an easy recommendation.
Pet Sematary (2019) is clearly aiming for a grim, modernized Stephen King gut-punch about grief and the terrible bargains people make when they can’t let go. The problem is it often feels like it’s rushing from “big moment” to “next big moment,” so the characters can come off thinner than the premise deserves and the emotional fallout doesn’t always land. The scares lean heavily on loud, bloody shock beats, and if you’re sensitive to graphic violence involving kids or you want horror that earns its dread through atmosphere and character, this may feel more nasty than meaningful. That said, John Lithgow brings some welcome warmth, and a few sequences have real creep factor—just don’t go in expecting a deeply satisfying payoff or the most faithful King adaptation.
