Hotel Transylvania (2012)

Hotel Transylvania is the kind of animated comedy that feels like a classic monster movie threw a pajama party and invited the whole family—bright, bouncy, and surprisingly sweet. Genndy Tartakovsky’s direction gives the film a rubbery, inventive energy, with sight gags and expressive animation that make even familiar creatures feel freshly alive. Adam Sandler’s Dracula is more frazzled dad than fearsome legend, and the warm father-daughter heart of the story (with Selena Gomez as a spirited Mavis) gives the laughs a genuine emotional anchor. It’s not aiming for edgy satire or deep myth-making, but if you want a creative, crowd-pleasing ride with big jokes and bigger heart, this hotel is well worth checking into.

Hotel Transylvania is clearly aiming to be a fast, kid-friendly monster romp with a sweet father–daughter heart and a goofy “humans vs. monsters” setup. The problem is it plays things very safe: the story hits familiar beats, the jokes lean heavily on loud slapstick, and the script often feels like it’s coasting on a cute premise rather than clever writing. If you’re expecting the wit and originality of top-tier animated films, this may feel thin and a bit derivative. That said, the animation has energy, the monster designs are fun, and if you’re in the mood for an easy, low-stakes family watch, it can still do the job.
