The Babymakers (2012)

The Babymakers takes an absurd, oddly heartfelt premise—turning fertility panic into a full-on heist comedy—and commits to it with the kind of shameless confidence that keeps you laughing even when you can’t believe what you’re watching. Jay Chandrasekhar stages the chaos with a loose, improvisational energy, and the cast (especially Paul Schneider’s beleaguered everyman and Kevin Heffernan’s ride-or-die buddy) sells the escalating stupidity with just enough sincerity to make it work. The vibe is raunchy, fast, and proudly juvenile, the sort of R-rated romp that aims for big, messy set pieces and lands more than a few. It’s not for anyone allergic to crude sexual humor or strong language, but if you’re in the mood for a dirty-minded caper with occasional genuine warmth, it’s an easy crowd-pleaser.

The Babymakers is aiming for a scrappy, outrageous heist-comedy twist on infertility anxiety, with the Broken Lizard style of pushing jokes way past good taste. The problem is it mostly confuses “raunchy” with “funny,” leaning hard on gross-out gags, loud slapstick, and one-liners that land with a thud more often than not. If you’re sensitive to heavy sexual talk, explicit nudity, and relentless profanity, this will feel less like edgy comedy and more like being trapped at a bad bachelor party. There are a few moments where the cast’s likability and commitment shine through, but you’ll need a high tolerance for tacky humor to enjoy the ride.
