Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009)

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans works because it treats its gothic monster mayhem like a real tragedy, giving the franchise an emotional spine without losing the sleek, leather-and-moonlight style that fans come for. Patrick Tatopoulos directs with a designer’s eye for icy castles, grimy underclasses, and kinetic battles, while Michael Sheen brings surprising fire and vulnerability to Lucian and Bill Nighy makes Viktor a chilling portrait of aristocratic cruelty. The result is a prequel that feels cleaner and more coherent than you might expect, building momentum scene by scene until the whole feud clicks into place. It’s not for the squeamish—this is R-rated, bloody, and unapologetically intense—but if you want fantasy action with real bite and a pulse of doomed romance, it’s an easy recommendation.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is clearly trying to give the franchise some mythic weight by turning the vampire–Lycan feud into a tragic rebellion-and-forbidden-romance origin story. The problem is it often feels like homework for fans rather than a story that stands confidently on its own, with plotting that can be muddled and action scenes that sometimes blur into noisy, hard-to-track chaos. The tone is relentlessly grim and humorless, so if you’re not already invested in the Underworld vibe, it can come off as derivative rather than dramatic.
