The vibe is a paranoid, post-9/11 chase thriller with clean geography and satisfying payoffs, the sort of movie that knows exactly how to build tension and then cash it in. Shooter clearly wants to be a slick, paranoid man-on-the-run thriller with a wronged hero, government rot, and some satisfying payback, and Mark Wahlberg’s no-nonsense intensity mostly sells that fantasy. The problem is the story leans hard on convenience—plot holes, big leaps in logic, and a simplistic “everyone’s corrupt” worldview that can make the suspense feel manufactured rather than earned. Antoine Fuqua keeps things loud and brisk, but the action and twists can start to feel repetitive and a bit derivative if you’ve seen a few better conspiracy thrillers.
