Pokiri (2006)
Pandu is a contract killer and will accept any contract provided the amount is right. The police want him for questioning, while the underworld needs him to silence their opponents. No one really knows this assassin's background. It is only Pandu who knows his real identity, and he has no intention of sharing it with anyone.
What people think about Pokiri
Pokiri has that rare, electric swagger where every scene feels like it’s got a pulse—slick, street-level crime storytelling fused with crowd-pleasing masala energy, and anchored by Mahesh Babu in a star-making performance that’s equal parts charm and menace. Director Puri Jagannadh keeps the vibe gritty but propulsive, letting the tension build through sharp confrontations, double-crossing underworld politics, and a hero whose silence is as intriguing as his violence. The film’s romance and humor give you breathers without deflating the danger, while the cat-and-mouse pressure from cops and gangsters keeps tightening the screws. It’s not for viewers who shy away from hard-hitting brutality or morally gray leads, but if you want an action-thriller that feels stylish, punchy, and relentlessly watchable, this one delivers.
Pokiri is aiming for a swaggering, high-octane gangster thriller with a mystery hook, and it largely succeeds if you’re here for Mahesh Babu’s cool, take-no-prisoners star vehicle and punchy confrontations. The trade-off is that it’s unapologetically loud and morally grim: violence is frequent and sometimes brutal, the world is packed with corruption, and there are unsettling threats and exploitation used to raise the stakes. The romance and comedy beats can feel like detours from the crime plot, and if you prefer grounded realism or tighter pacing, the tonal swings may test your patience. If you like sleek mass-action with a payoff twist and don’t mind harsh subject matter, it can be a satisfying ride; if you’re sensitive to cruelty or want a more restrained thriller, this probably isn’t your night.
