Frontier(s) (2007)
A gang of young thieves flee Paris during the violent aftermath of a political election, only to hole up at an Inn run by neo-Nazis.
What people think about Frontier(s)
Frontier(s) is what happens when the backwoods-horror template gets plugged straight into the live wire of social unrest: it’s furious, propulsive, and shot with a grimy visual confidence that makes every hallway and shadow feel hostile. Xavier Gens doesn’t pretend this is “elevated” in the polite sense—he delivers blunt, nightmarish intensity and genuine shock value, but with enough cinematic ideas and momentum to keep it from feeling like empty sadism. The vibe is relentless and sweaty, part action-thriller panic and part survival horror, with the political ugliness outside echoing the ugliness within. Fair warning: the violence is graphic and thematically nasty, so it’s not for the squeamish, but if you want a mean, high-energy jolt of French extremity that doesn’t pull its punches, this one hits hard.
Frontier(s) is trying to mash up riot-era social panic with a no-exit survival horror setup, and it does commit to that grim, politically charged mood from the start. The problem is it quickly turns into an endurance test where the main “idea” becomes escalating torture and gore, with little narrative surprise or thematic depth to justify how nasty it gets. If you’re hoping for sharp commentary, inventive thrills, or characters you actually want to follow, this will likely feel derivative and relentlessly miserable. That said, if you specifically want early-2000s French extremity with aggressive pacing, practical effects, and a feral final stretch, it delivers exactly that—just don’t expect it to be anything but brutal.
