The Stepfather (2009)
Michael Harding returns home from military school to find his mother happily in love and living with her new boyfriend, David. As the two men get to know each other, Michael becomes more and more suspicious of the man who is always there with a helpful hand. Is he really the man of her dreams or could David be hiding a dark side?
What people think about The Stepfather
The Stepfather is the kind of suburban nightmare thriller that works because it’s so cleanly put together: everything looks normal, even inviting, until the tiniest inconsistencies start to feel like cracks in the foundation. Nelson McCormick keeps the tension wound tight and glossy without getting cartoonish, letting Dylan Walsh play charm as something you can’t quite trust and giving Penn Badgley a grounded, anxious determination that pulls you deeper into the suspicion. It’s a slick, proficient remake that understands the slow dread of realizing you may be living with a stranger, and it delivers its shocks with PG-13 restraint but real bite. If you want gory excess or supernatural twists, this isn’t that movie—but if you like psychological cat-and-mouse suspense that builds steadily and pays off, it’s a very satisfying watch.
The Stepfather (2009) is clearly aiming for a slick, suburban paranoia thriller about the nightmare of letting the wrong person into your family, and it does have a strong hook in that “something’s off” tension. The problem is it often plays like a toned-down, made-for-TV remake: familiar beats, a pretty monotonous build, and character decisions that can feel more convenient than convincing. Dylan Walsh brings a polished, unsettling charm and the setup is inherently creepy, but if you want sharp writing, genuine menace, or the bite of the 1987 original, this may feel tame and a bit tedious. If you’re okay with a PG-13, straightforward cat-and-mouse thriller that’s more watchable than memorable, it’ll pass the time—just don’t expect it to leave a mark.
