The Counterfeiters (2007)

Stefan Ruzowitzky stages the horror with a bracing realism, but the film’s true power comes from Karl Markovics’ performance: charismatic, guarded, and quietly devastated, he makes Salomon Sorowitsch feel like a man improvising his soul under pressure. The tone is tense and unsentimental—gripping without cheap catharsis—while the claustrophobic workshop setting becomes its own battleground of conscience, pride, and resistance. It’s not an easy watch and it won’t satisfy anyone looking for a sweeping war epic, but if you want a Holocaust drama that’s genuinely complex, sharply acted, and haunting long after the credits, this one earns your time.
