The Love Guru (2008)

The Love Guru is the kind of broad, unapologetically goofy studio comedy that swings for the fences and doesn’t care who’s watching from the cheap seats—Mike Myers turns Guru Pitka into a walking cartoon of self-help slogans, awkward charisma, and shameless wordplay. Set against the oddly satisfying backdrop of pro hockey and romantic misery, it keeps a brisk, silly momentum, peppering its warmhearted “fix your life” premise with celebrity cameos and escalating absurdity. When it lands, it lands with the giddy confidence of a movie that knows it’s being ridiculous and invites you to laugh at the sheer nerve of it. Fair warning: the humor is crude, juvenile, and very much not for everyone, but if you’re in the mood for a noisy, brain-off comedy that commits hard to its own nonsense, this one can be a surprisingly easy watch.

The problem is the movie leans hard on crude, gross-out shock gags and repetitive innuendo, so the jokes often feel more desperate than clever and the story beats land with a thud. If you’re sensitive to juvenile sexual humor, stereotypes played for laughs, or you need tight writing and earned punchlines, this will likely feel like a long 80+ minutes. The small upside is that the cast commits and there are a few scattered moments of absurdity that might work if your taste runs to anything-goes, middle-school-level comedy.
