The problem is that Tom Hooper’s approach can feel overly polite and carefully staged, keeping the emotional messiness at arm’s length when you might want something more raw, specific, and revealing about Lili’s inner life. If you’re looking for a bold, psychologically deep, or culturally sharp exploration of trans experience, this may come off as tasteful but frustratingly conventional. Still, Eddie Redmayne and especially Alicia Vikander bring sincerity and tenderness, and if you want a restrained period romance-tragedy with strong performances and striking visuals, it may work for you.
