The real marvel is Jacob Kogan, who turns refinement and intelligence into something quietly menacing, so every polite line and composed gesture carries a shiver of possibility. It’s sharply paced, darkly funny in the way only discomfort can be, and if you like your horror rooted in behavior and psychology (not gore), it’s a wickedly smart watch—though anyone sensitive to stories about children in peril or mental illness may find it a tough sit.

Joshua is clearly aiming for an upscale, slow-burn domestic nightmare: a glossy Manhattan family drama that turns into psychological horror with a chilling child at the center. The problem is it often feels like it’s marching toward an outcome you can see coming, so the tension can drain out when you’re waiting for the movie to catch up to what it’s already telegraphed. If you need twists, complex character shading, or a sense that anything could happen, this may strike you as slick but formulaic and a bit emotionally remote. Still, the performances (especially Rockwell and Farmiga) and the cold, controlled atmosphere can be effective if you’re in the mood for a grim, discomfort-first thriller rather than a genuinely surprising one.
