Angels & Demons (2009)

Angels & Demons is the rare big-studio thriller that actually moves like a thriller: brisk, propulsive, and built on that delicious ticking-clock anxiety where every clue feels like it matters. Ron Howard turns Rome and the Vatican into a gorgeous, shadowy playground of art, stone, and secrets, and the movie’s pleasure is in watching Tom Hanks’ Robert Langdon sprint from one breathtaking location to the next as the mystery tightens its grip. It’s slick, smart enough to keep you leaning forward, and staged with the kind of clean, confident action and suspense that makes two hours disappear. Fair warning: the imagery can get intense for PG-13 and the conspiratorial tone is unapologetically pulpy, but if you want a crowd-pleasing, globe-trotting puzzle box with real momentum, this one delivers.

Angels & Demons is clearly trying to be a breathless Vatican-set scavenger hunt, mixing symbology, science-vs-faith debate, and ticking-clock peril into a glossy Ron Howard thriller. The problem is it often feels like you’re watching the plot sprint ahead while the characters jog behind, with lots of exposition dumps and convenient “aha” leaps that ask you to stop thinking and just keep up. If you enjoy puzzle-box mysteries and don’t mind absurd turns as long as the pace stays high, there’s fun to be had—Tom Hanks is steady, the locations are impressive, and the energy is higher than its predecessor. But if you need grounded logic, subtle performances, or a thriller that earns its twists instead of announcing them, this one will likely feel loud, clunky, and more exhausting than exciting.
