Charm School (2007)

Charm School is the kind of comedy that sneaks up on you: it starts with a firecracker of a heroine and turns into a surprisingly warm, sharp look at how young women are trained to “behave” for everyone else’s comfort. Fernando Sariñana keeps the tone brisk and playful, letting Martha Higareda’s Adela bounce off Blanca Guerra’s steel-spined headmistress in a battle of wills that’s as funny as it is oddly touching. Beneath the etiquette lessons and social posturing, the film finds real affection in the friendships that form inside the school, and it treats rebellion not as a gimmick but as a messy, human need to be seen. If you’re allergic to broad, crowd-pleasing comedy or tidy resolutions, it may feel a bit glossy—but if you want a lively, feel-good romp with bite and heart, this one earns its charm.

Charm School wants to be a cheeky, feel-good “rebellious girl gets polished” comedy with a bit of heart, and it does have an appealing lead in Martha Higareda plus a fun ensemble of misfit students. The problem is the movie often settles for predictable sitcom beats and broad caricatures, so the lessons, romances, and big emotional turns can feel more like checkboxes than earned moments.
