Rendition (2007)

Rendition is the rare post‑9/11 thriller that actually has something to say, and says it with the pulse and precision of a well-made suspense film rather than a lecture. Gavin Hood stages the story with urgent momentum, cutting between a vanished man, a wife fighting a wall of silence, and a CIA analyst whose job becomes a test of conscience—each thread tightening the moral vise without tipping its hand. Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal give grounded, human performances, while Meryl Streep brings a chilling calm to the machinery of “necessary” decisions. It’s tough viewing because the violence and torture are blunt and unsettling, but if you want a serious, confident drama-thriller that sticks in your mind after the credits, this one earns your time.

Rendition is clearly trying to be an urgent, post-9/11 moral thriller about extraordinary rendition, torture, and the human cost of national security decisions, and the intent is admirable. The problem is it often feels like it’s lecturing rather than dramatizing, with characters and conflicts pushed into blunt, simplified positions that make the big ethical questions feel oddly shallow. Despite a stacked cast and a few genuinely tense moments, the storytelling can come off overwrought and emotionally pre-packaged, so you may leave feeling prodded instead of persuaded. If you want a nuanced, deeply textured political drama, this might frustrate you; if you can tolerate heavy-handed messaging for the sake of a tense, topical cautionary tale (and you’re okay with brutal torture scenes), it’s still watchable.
