Under the Same Moon has that rare, disarming sincerity that sneaks past your defenses: it’s a big-hearted drama that treats immigration not as a talking point, but as a lived reality measured in phone calls, small sacrifices, and the fierce gravity between a mother and her child. Patricia Riggen keeps the tone intimate and humane even when the road turns frightening, and the film’s warmth comes from people—Kate del Castillo’s aching resilience, Adrián Alonso’s quietly fearless determination, and Eugenio Derbez revealing an unexpectedly tender depth. It’s the kind of movie that earns its tears because it never feels manipulative; it simply watches its characters with compassion and lets love do the heavy lifting. Fair warning: if you’re allergic to earnest, emotionally direct storytelling, it may feel a bit plainly constructed—but if you want a heartfelt, crowd-pleasing cry that still respects its subjects, this one stays with you.

Under the Same Moon is clearly aiming for a heartfelt, crowd-pleasing immigrant-family tearjerker, and it does have a sincere core in the mother-and-son bond and the performances (especially the kid and a surprisingly grounded turn from Eugenio Derbez). The problem is it often feels engineered to make you cry, with convenient coincidences and a tidy, melodramatic rhythm that can sand down the harsher edges of the real-world issue it’s depicting. If you’re sensitive to sentimental storytelling or get annoyed when a movie seems to tug the strings a little too obviously, this may come off as manipulative rather than moving. But if you’re in the mood for an accessible, emotional drama with clear heroes, clear obstacles, and a big heart, it can still land.
